The Department of Industrial Engineering (DIEF), established in 2013, was created through the merger of the two industrial-area departments of the University of Florence: the “Sergio Stecco” Department of Energy Engineering and the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Technologies (DMTI).
DIEF is the University’s reference department for Industrial Engineering, within which it carries out research, teaching, and Third-mission activities, including technological and cultural transfer.

The Director is a governing body of the Department, elected by the Department Council from among the tenured full professors affiliated with the Department, except in cases provided for by law. The Director is appointed by Rector’s decree, serves a term of four academic years, and may be re-elected only once consecutively. The Director may appoint a Vice Director from among the Council members to assist and represent them in case of absence or incapacity. Furthermore, the Director may delegate specific tasks – including for a limited period – to members of the Council or the Executive Committee (excluding those referred to c.2 dell'art. 16 del Regolamento dei Dipartimenti), with such delegation reported to the Council at its next meeting.

The Department Council of Industrial Engineering is composed of:
The Council is the Department’s governing and strategic body. It is chaired by the Director and consists of all full professors and researchers affiliated with the Department, as well as representatives of the technical-administrative staff and of language lecturers and expert collaborators assigned to the Department (15% of the members), in addition to the Administrative Manager. The Department Regulations establish the participation of representatives of students, PhD candidates, and research fellows. Council meetings are valid if at least half plus one of the members entitled to vote are present, except in cases where the law provides a different quorum. Excused absences are not counted in determining the quorum for valid meetings.

The Board is a departmental body that assists the Director and is responsible for all matters not expressly reserved to the Department Council. The Board consists of the Director, who chairs it, a representative group of professors and researchers, a representative of the technical and administrative staff, language lecturers and expert collaborators selected from the Council members, as well as representatives of students, PhD candidates, and research fellows chosen from the Council members. The Administrative Manager also participates in Board meetings with an advisory vote. Members of the Board serve a four-year term and may be re-elected only once consecutively.p>

The Department Steering and Self-Evaluation Committee is an internal body of the Department with advisory and consultative functions. Its role is to support the Department’s governing bodies in policies regarding the use of resources and in guiding scientific research, technology transfer, and innovation activities. The Steering and Self-Evaluation Committee of DIEF is appointed by the Department Council upon the Director’s proposal, after consulting the Section Coordinators, and serves a four-year term. It is composed of five professors and researchers from the Department and may be supplemented by up to three additional experts from national or international research institutions, who are active and competent in research areas relevant to the scientific-disciplinary sectors covered by the Department. These external experts participate in meetings without voting rights..

Standing or ad hoc committees may be established by the Department Council through a specific resolution defining their composition and responsibilities. The Department Council may rely on the preparatory work or advisory activities of these standing or ad hoc committees, including for the examination of specific issues as they arise. If necessary, external experts not belonging to the Department Council may also participate in the committees’ work without voting rights, upon appointment by the Council.
