Railway Engineering

Scientific coordinator: Andrea Bracciali

The research team coordinated by Prof. Andrea Bracciali deals with many aspects concerning railway engineering for both rolling stock and permanent way. Research activities are carried out mainly at RailLab (the railway engineering lab). Such activities cover the main aspects of scientific analysis applied to railway transportation, both from experimental and theoretical point of view.

Some of the experimental activities are:

  • in field dynamic measurements (with accelerometers, strain gauges and microphones);
  • development of systems and equipments for signaling;
  • measurements of track irregularities;

The main in lab activities are:

  • simulation of dynamic behavior of railway vehicles;
  • analysis and simulation of wear from wheel/rail contact;
  • FEM analysis of components from vehicles and permanent way;
  • development of track dynamic models;
  • implementation of ad hoc algorithms;
