Research Units

The Department of Industrial Engineering (DIEF) participates in various Interdepartmental Research Units, contributing to fields from sustainability and medicine to cultural heritage. Through this network, DIEF reinforces its mission to translate basic research into applied solutions with a tangible impact on society, industry, and the local area.

LaSIS - Laboratory for Road Safety and Accident Investigation

Research and training on vehicle and infrastructure safety, road accident analysis, driving simulations, and crash tests.

SusFashionLab - Sustainable Fashion Laboratory

The SusFashionLab (Sustainable Fashion Laboratory) is an Interdepartmental Research Unit of the University of Florence entirely dedicated to the sustainability of the fashion supply chain

Its research activities span several areas, covering the entire life cycle of fashion products:

  • Eco-friendly Design (Ecodesign): Study and development of biomaterials and sustainable materials (e.g., microbial and plant cultures) for the creation of new fabrics and products
  • Circular Economy and Recycling: Development of innovative strategies and technologies for "closed-loop" recovery e recycling (mechanical, chemical, thermochemical, and microbiological) of textile materials, managing and repurposing production waste and end-of-life products.
  • Corporate Assessment (ESG): Measurement of corporate sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) ratings, , providing tools for responsible management and supply chain traceability.
  • Strategy and Design: Addressing design, economic, and social issues related to sustainability.

In addition to the DIEF (Department of Industrial Engineering), the unit includes the "Ugo Schiff" Department of Chemistry, the Department of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Forestry, the Department of Economics and Management, and the Department of Architecture.

The contact person (Referent) for the DIEF is Prof. Massimo Delogu

MATCHlab -MATerials CHaracterisation LAB

The research unit combines the expertise of the Department of Industrial Engineering and the "Ugo Schiff" Department of Chemistry.

Its main objective is the in-depth characterization of materials, focusing on the study of the following properties:

  • Microstructural: Analysis of the composition and morphology of materials at the microscopic level.
  • Surface: Investigation of finishes, roughness, wettability, and corrosion resistance (for example, through spectroscopy techniques and Scanning Electron Microscopy – SEM/EDS).
  • Mechanical:Execution of standardized mechanical tests (tensile, bending, fatigue, etc.).

The unit provides support for scientific and industrial research, applying these techniques across various sectors, including highly specialized fields such as jewelry making or industrial component design.

The contact person for the DIEF is Prof. Emanuele Galvanetto
