Presentation

The researchers of DIEF carry out research activities spanning the various fields of industrial engineering, addressing their main cultural, scientific, and professional aspects. Their shared goal is to transform ideas into original and concrete solutions in order to promote genuine technological innovation for the benefit of society and the productive system.

The activities of the Department’s research groups cover a wide range of topics in industrial engineering. From turbomachinery to positive displacement machines, from aeronautical and internal combustion engines to wind turbines, research also extends to renewable energy and environmentally friendly refrigeration systems. Particular attention is devoted to the design and construction of machinery, road and rail vehicles, innovative materials, and nanotechnologies. The Department is also active in the fields of bioengineering and robotics (rehabilitation, assistive, and underwater robotics), as well as in the development of technologies for Industry 4.0, including 3D printing. Expertise further extends to technologies for the fashion industry and the enhancement of cultural heritage, as well as to operations, supply chain, and innovation management. The picture is completed by research on industrial logistics, reliability, safety, and the environmental sustainability of products and processes.

Participation in research and technology transfer projects at the regional, national, and international levels, in synergy with companies and Research and Development centers, represents one of the pillars of DIEF’s activities. The success rate in European research and innovation programs (e.g., Horizon Europe), as well as in national (e.g., PRIN) and regional (POR-FESR 2021-2027) programs, is high.

The Department hosts numerous Research Units and Joint Laboratories with public and private partners, thereby strengthening its ability to attract private investment. In addition, it actively participates in Interdepartmental Centers (including CREAR, the Interdepartmental Center for Alternative and Renewable Energy) and Interuniversity Centers (such as ISME, the Interuniversity Research Center for Integrated Systems for the Marine Environment), as well as Interuniversity Consortia (for example, INSTM, the National Interuniversity Consortium for Materials Science and Technology), thereby consolidating its role as a technological and innovation hub.
