The Department is divided into Sections. Each Section performs advisory and proposal functions for the Department Board and the Department Executive Board through its Coordinator. In addition, it prepares, approves and submits, through the Section Coordinator, to the Department Board and the Advisory and Self-Assessment Committee a report on the activities carried out by the professors and researchers belonging to the Section and on the programme of activities for the following academic year. Each Section also performs the function of evaluating the scientific profiles of candidates for teaching contracts.
The Sections into which the Department is divided are:
The Section consists of:
The members belong to the Scientific Disciplinary Sector Analisi Numerica (MATH-05/A).
The Section is divided into the following groups:
The researchers belonging to the Section are active in the field of materials science and have diverse areas of expertise, united by the same research interests. The chemistry component explores the structure-property relationships of supramolecular solids with the aim of creating materials with controlled properties (from pharmaceuticals to coordination polymers for green applications) and nanostructured solid systems for magnetic and energy applications. The Materials Engineering group has many years of experience in the study and characterisation of materials, with particular emphasis on the development of functional coatings and surface treatments. In particular, the main areas of research concern, or have concerned, the optimisation of anti-corrosion coatings and treatments for metallic materials, the surface modification of stainless steels to improve their corrosion and wear resistance, the development of materials and methods for additive manufacturing, and the deposition of thin and thick films with antibacterial, superhydrophobic properties and for aerospace and energy applications. The bioengineering group conducts research in the fields of tissue engineering, biomaterials, smart materials, biomechanics and biomedical robotics.
The Section consists of:
The members belong to the Scientific Disciplinary Sectors Scienza e Tecnologia dei Materiali (IMAT-01/A), Fondamenti Chimici delle Tecnologie (CHEM-06/A), Bioingegneria Industriale (IBIO-01/A).
The Section is divided into the following groups:
Scientific and teaching activities focus on thematic areas that are characteristic of the industrial engineering sector. More specifically, research activities are directed towards the design, testing and manufacturing processes of machines and mechanical systems, studying the set of methods and tools for the conception, development, experimental verification and manufacture of functional, reliable and safe products, also taking environmental sustainability into account throughout the entire life cycle. The use of advanced materials and the processes of manufacturing, processing, monitoring, degradation and disposal of materials and those involved in their production processes are also studied. The presence of this Section is justified by the specificity of the topics addressed and the importance of the research carried out.
The Section consists of:
The members belong to the Scientific Disciplinary Sector Progettazione meccanica e costruzione di macchine (IIND-03/A)
The Section is divided into the following groups:
The Section's research areas mainly concern the following topics: Computer-Aided Design and Modelling Systems; Computer Graphics; Computer Vision and Reverse Engineering; Virtual Prototyping; Design Support Methods; Additive Manufacturing and Design for Additive Manufacturing, methods and tools supporting inventive product design and business process re-engineering activities; personalised medical devices; development of high-fidelity anatomical simulators; environmental and industrial acoustics. The Section's research activities are strategic for the Department as they are aimed at developing systems, methods and tools, including multidisciplinary ones, that can be used in multiple engineering sectors.
The Section consists of:
The members belong to the Scientific Disciplinary Sector Disegno e Metodi dell’Ingegneria Industriale (IIND-03/B)
The Section is divided into the following groups:
The Section coordinates the activities of teaching staff, taking into account their different areas of expertise. This synergy makes it possible to address research issues more effectively through systematic approaches also aimed at meeting the requirements of public and private clients from regulatory, technical and economic perspectives. The research topics mainly correspond to those specific to the two disciplinary groupings.
For the Engineering Physics sector, activities therefore concern applied thermodynamics, the study of heat and mass transfer, refrigeration, the thermodynamics of systems for the use and storage of energy in its various forms (both conventional and renewable), the thermal physics of the building-plant system in relation to energy efficiency and comfort, and the environmental impact of energy applications.
With regard to the Manufacturing Technologies sector, activities focus on: optimisation of production processes using machining technologies, with particular emphasis on the control and reduction of vibrations and geometric errors; development of optimised solutions for the aerospace sector; development of solutions for the production of metal components using WAAM additive manufacturing technology, particularly using materials such as titanium, nickel-based alloys, alloy steels and aluminium; microstructural and metallurgical characterisation of materials deposited using Additive Manufacturing techniques.
All these topics have applications in teaching and research in the fields of Engineering and Architecture.
The Section consists of:
The members belong to the Scientific Disciplinary Sectors Fisica Tecnica Industriale (IIND-07/A) and Tecnologie e Sistemi di Lavorazione (IIND-04/A).
The Section is divided into the following groups:
The Section includes teaching and research staff belonging to the scientific disciplinary sectors ING-IND/05/A and IEGE-01/A, who conduct research on methods for managing and optimising production systems and in the fields of operations management, asset management, maintenance engineering and reliability. The research groups apply these skills to a wide range of industrial contexts, both in manufacturing and services, collaborating with leading companies on technological innovation projects commissioned by private clients and/or through regional, national and European funding programmes. The experience gained through these research collaborations has a profound impact on the Department's Educational Offer, particularly shaping first- and second-cycle degree programme educational projects in Management Engineering.
The Section consists of:
The members belong to the Scientific Disciplinary Sectors Impianti industriali meccanici (IIND-05/A) and Ingegneria economico-industriale (IEGE-01/A).
The following group is active within the Section:
OE-STAR (Operational Excellence – Systems, Technology, Analysis & Research) (contact person: Filippo De Carlo)
The Section's research activities mainly focus on the development of investigative methodologies, tools, and models relating to fields of application within the scientific and disciplinary context of machines and energy systems, but also extend to activities in fluid dynamics and propulsion (SSD IIND/06-07). Its members conduct theoretical, modelling, and experimental research on thermodynamic, fluid-dynamic, energy-related, ecological, technological, and environmental issues concerning fluid machinery and systems for the conversion of energy in its various forms, both conventional and renewable.
The Section consists of:
The members belong to the Scientific Disciplinary Sectors Macchine a fluido (IIND-06/A) and Sistemi per l'energia e l'ambiente (IIND-06/B).
