Governing Bodies

The Head of Department is a member of the Department elected by the Department Board from among the full-time full professors belonging to the Department, except in cases provided for by law. The Head of Department is appointed by Rector’s decree, serves a four-year academic term and may be re-elected only once consecutively. The Head of Department may appoint, from among the members of the Board, a Deputy Head of Department who assists and replaces them in the event of absence or impediment. In addition, the Head of Department may delegate to members of the Board or the Department Executive Board the performance of specific duties — also for a fixed period — excluding those referred to in paragraph 2 of Article 16 of the Regulations for Departments, informing the Board at the first available meeting.

The Department Board is the Department's governing and policy-making body. The Board is chaired by the Head of Department and is composed of all tenured professors and researchers belonging to the Department, as well as representatives of the technical and administrative staff and of the language assistants and expert language collaborators assigned to the Department (15% of the members), in addition to the Administrative Manager. The Regulations for Departments govern the participation of representatives of students and Ph.D. students, as well as research fellows. Meetings of the Board are valid if at least half plus one of those entitled to participate are present, except where legal provisions establish a different quorum. Justified absences are not taken into account when determining the quorum required for meetings to be valid.

The Department Executive Board is a Department body that assists the Head of Department and is responsible for all matters not expressly reserved for the Department Board. The Department Executive Board is composed of the Head of Department, who chairs it, representatives of professors and researchers, a representative of the technical and administrative staff, language assistants and expert language collaborators selected from among the members of the Board, representatives of students and Ph.D. students, as well as research fellows, selected from among the members of the Board. The Administrative Manager also participates in meetings of the Department Executive Board in an advisory capacity. Members of the Department Executive Board serve for four years and may be re-elected only once consecutively.
