Thermo Group is the research group within DIEF dealing with thermodynamics and heat transfer in their broadest sense. It was founded in the late 1990s on the initiative of Professor Giuseppe Grazzini, with research activities dedicated to the optimisation of refrigeration systems (with particular emphasis on ejectors, multiphase fluid dynamics and natural refrigerants), second-law analysis of energy systems, HVAC equipment and buildings energy performance. Recently, the group has extended its research interests to thermofluid-dynamic and multiphysics analysis of heat and mass transfer devices, optimisation of refrigeration and heat pump cycles, simulations of HDH desalination systems, assessment of the environmental impact of energy systems, and other areas where thermodynamics and heat transfer are the vital core. The Group has its own laboratory (Thermo Lab), where experimental activities are carried out to support the various research topics, and important calculation resources for CFD analysis.
The group is partner of the following international and national research projects: THUNDER (Horizon Europe), ATENA (Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio), CO2 mix (PRIN).
It collaborates, through commercial and scientific agreement, with various companies involved, at various levels, in the above mentioned fields.
Currently, the research group consists of one full professor, two associate professors, two researchers (RTD A), six PhD students, one funded researcher (Assegnista di Ricerca) and one laboratory technician.
