Manufacturing Technology Research Lab - MTRL

Manufacturing Technologies Research Laboratory (MTRL)

The Manufacturing Technologies Research Laboratory (MTRL) is dedicated to experimental research activities in the fields of machining processes and additive manufacturing technologies. Its mission is to develop innovative solutions for modern manufacturing through a strong integration of numerical and experimental methods. Experimental research on machining focuses on monitoring solutions dealing with vibrations and surface quality as well testing of physics-based solutions for Computer Aided Manufacturing and machining surface. In this regard the laboratory is equipped with:

  • 5-axis milling center DMG Mori DMU 75 monoblock
  • CNC lathe DMG Mori CTX 450 ecoline

Furthermore, the laboratory is equipped with sensors and equipment to perform Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA) on mechanical components. In the area of additive manufacturing, the laboratory conducts research on metal deposition processes, with particular emphasis on Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). In this regard experimental research is focused on parameter optimization, strategies for repairing mechanical components and Dot by Dot (Dbd) processes. For these activities the laboratory is equipped with:

  •  3 axis WAAM station with Fronius TPS 320i
  • 5 axis WAAM station with Fronius TPS 320i
  • Robotic welding cell Fronius – Universal Robotics

Through its infrastructure and multidisciplinary expertise, the laboratory supports both fundamental and applied research, fostering collaboration with industrial partners and contributing to the development of next-generation manufacturing processes.
